AJD Angels of Hope chosen by UC Davis Internship and Career Center / CSRC as Organization of the Month of December 2013

My daughter and I founded a charity named after her (Alicia J. Demaree) AJD Angels of Hope Foundation.  It became a 501©(3) public charity locally and internationally in the Philippines.  As we continue to thrive for supports and donors, it has been chosen as the Organization of the Month of December by the UC Davis Internship and Career Center / Community Service Resource Center.

oAJD Angels of Hope is a local non-profit organization thats goal is to provide relief to poor, distressed or underprivileged children and their families in the Philippines. They do this in part by sending care packages with clothes, toys, school supplies, books, non-perishable foods, baby products, and other accessories that will bring smiles to these needy children. This organization also provides medical and dental free clinic through our partnership with Can+Hear Charity. Currently they are also pooling their efforts to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
oOur center has partnered with AJD Angels of Hope on many occasions. Almost every Weekend of Service we recruit UC Davis students to volunteer with them. During the Fall 2013 Weekend of Service 11 volunteers helped prepare for their annual Fun Fair, that is a fundraiser for them. We would like to recognize them for their dedication to helping underprivileged children and their invaluable efforts in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. We also want to create even more support for this incredible organization.

AJD Angels of Hope was an idea started by 14 year old, 9th grader and Girl Scout Alicia J. Demaree (AJD). She visited her mother’s heritage, the Philippines, in 2009 and felt devastated watching the poor children in the street, and how they lived their life in poverty. She would give the children all of her snacks and candies that she kept in her backpack and she asked her mother, Zita Demaree, who was an immigrant to the US, to send her old clothes and toys to help the children in the Philippines. When the mother-daughter duo came back to US, they thought of making this idea a larger reality and instead of just contributing their individual donations, they formed an organization. AJD Angels of Hope Foundation was born on May 2010 and was incorporated by the State of California on August 3, 2010. On October 26, 2011, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recognized AJD Angels of Hope Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity working towards international relief.o

AJD Angels of Hope is partering with Can+Hear Marco Emmanuel Charity to help in the relief of Typhoon Haiyan. You can help them in this. You can also bring items to donate to AJD Angels of Hope to the Community Service Resource Center in 106 South Hall.

o In order to let us know more about AJD Angels of Hope its founder Zita Demaree gave us some incite. Zita is a UC Davis staff member and was a recipient of the 2012 UC Davis Outstanding Community Service Award.

What is it like working for a non-profit:

AJD Angels of Hope Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity non-profit organization which envisions to provide assistance to precious children who have been orphaned or abandoned by their families. Our mission is to provide relief of the poor and distressed and underprivileged children and their families by sending care packages on boxes with non-perishable foods (canned goods), clothes, toys, school supplies, baby products, and other accessories that will bring smiles to these needy children locally and internationally. We also help provide a Medical and Dental free clinic, scholarships, and child sponsorships through our partnership with brother charity Can+Hear Marco Emmanuel Charity.  As a 501(c) (3) all donations to AJD Angels of Hope are tax deductible. Working for a non-profit is not so easy. You have to have the drive and the passion for all that you do. My daughter AJD gave me inspiration. The desire of helping impoverished children and families should truly come from within your heart! The fundraising is challenging and working from the ground up takes a lot of hard work and dedication, especially when you face a relief operation that encompasses the need to help humanity, just like the recent earthquake on October 15, 2013 and typhoon Haiyan on November 8, 2013 in the Philippines. I also have the desire to build community service leaders through the pool of students that come and ask me for volunteer works. I create projects to provide volunteers and interns the ability to bring the best of them.

What should students know about AJD Angels of Hope and how can they get involved?

We are accepting volunteers and interns.  AJD Angels of Hope Foundation can provide certification for community service hours as needed. We have a community service Arts and Craft for Kids booth at the Davis Farmers Market every Saturday from 8 am – 1 pm and Wednesday 4:00pm – 8:30 pm (except in winter).  You may also join us at Square Tomatoes Craft Fair with our AJD Lumpia food booth every first Sunday of the month. You can also participate in our year round donation drive of basic necessities to send to our charity in the Philippines. We also have programs and events like the Hygiene Operation for Mother’s Day, Rose or Chocolate Grams for Valentines, Fun Fair, and Charitable Giving events.  You can become a member of AJD Angels of Hope Foundation and the student organization at UC Davis, AJD Angels of Hope Club.  Most importantly, please pass the word on about our organization as we thrive for more supports and donors. Please keep checking our website at http://ajdangelsofhope.org and LIKE us at Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/AJDAngelsofhope.org. For questions and volunteer opportunities please contact ZITA DEMAREE at zmdemaree@comcast.net  (530) 763-7087.

Calamities strikes one after another – I am so shattered by Haiyan typhoon!

I just can’t keep up with everything!!!   The devastation is beyond our imagination.  No words can ever say how devastated I am right now.  From earthquake to typhoon.  I am glad my family are okay. Some of my co-workers are talking to me this morning and I just can’t help but cry!  When you are running a public charity that help towards the impoverished children and families in my country, my emotions sucked by it.  Yesterday, I sent emergency funding towards food, water and medicines.   All our volunteers are now busy packing for rice, canned goods, water and even medicines.  Very sad to see the children and people scattered all over town dead!

My partner and brother Doctor Emmanuel Mercado, founder of Can+Hear Marco Emmanuel Charity planned a scheduled trip to Tacloban, Leyte and with the another typhoon and people getting agitated in the disaster areas, I don’t think it is a good idea to even travel at seas to bring our relief donations.  My AJD Angels volunteers nurses are even ready to go but I feel responsible for the safety of my brother, my family and our volunteers. This weekend, will have a scheduled outreach to Northern Cebu which is also battered by Haiyan typhoon but not so much attention since all the attention is now focused on Tacloban, Leyte.  Help is coming!

Please consider making a donations to any relief organizations that you can trust to help the people who survived from typhoon Haiyan – Yolanda

When it rains it pours! But thanks God everyone in the family is safe after 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Cebu and Bohol!

It has been a very tiresome journey but I don’t feel tired until my body told me I am physically exhausted!  After the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Cebu and Bohol where the rest of my families are located just kept me waking up last night.  Those last few nights that I was also exhausted trying to get my two events (2013 FUN FAIR and 2013 Charitable Giving)  in shape.  Thank you God that the children and families are okay.  Although, everyone are still shaking with the constant aftershocks, everyone are glad it was a holiday where all the kids are not at school during the earthquake.

Yippee!! So come down come all!

Eric, Tiani and I finalize today our application to DCC for our 3rd 2013 Charitable Giving scheduled on December 14, 2013.  This is a FREE EVENT invitational only to the children of low-income families at the school district and homeless shelter.

I have been looking around downtown for an affordable small space that I can start our AJD Angels of Hope café/boutique.  Not that our town is very expensive, but I can’t just get one and trust that my student interns and volunteers will run it for me while I will be at work all day.  So, I hope AJD will be back soon and see what the future  holds for my charity!

God bless!!

Ready for the coming academic year?

Hello!

I hope everyone have a great summer.  Thank you to all of you who stayed during Summer Session 1 and help me out.  And welcome back to those that are here for Summer Session 2.  We have so many projects to prepare for and I am so ready for the coming academic year.  As long as I am still breathing we can continue working with our organization to have a place on the map. AJD and I had a great vacation.  I hope Michelle has a great vacation out in Europe and all the rest of you.   I hope next year, some of us will be able to do some good work towards developing country for international medical mission.

Well, Eric needs to schedule the board meeting as soon as he comes back and plan for the upcoming The Buzz at UCD as AJD Angels of Hope will be hosting the carnival.   Sodexo started calling for volunteers for the upcoming sports events and Mondavi shows.  Eric started working few hours before the end of the year.  So if any of you have the time, please sign up.   Thanks.

Not all of us have Facebook account since it is just a destruction so Eric and I will set up  another online way of communicating.  I might also deactivate my account because it is more hassle for me to have so many friends.  I think it is making people crazy to be up so early in the morning to be online at Facebook!   I just need my time to work on my website and plenty of time just ME!

I will be gone again for few days in August.  VN CARES reminding me of the Saturdays that they will host our AJDAOH Arts and Crafts in the Park booth this coming months.  It would ne nice to have some activities for kids again.

See you soon.

Zita
